These keys had specific functions tied into IBM mainframes. These were sold with keyboards for different business applications over time, including 66, 78, and 90 key versions. Mainframes with terminals, like the IBM 3270. Keyboards were very expensive, and so basic typewriter like functionality was needed. In fact none had number pads or any of that at all. None of these early machines featured delete keys. In the early days of computing there were machines like the Apple II, the Vic 20 or even the Commodore 64.
